After driving past Rise & Shine's huge sign on Bridge St. touting the "Best Breakfast in Town," I felt compelled to stop there for my eggs this morning. Rise & Shine's breakfast's reputation precedes it: My BFF's parents go there frequently and love it, and they reliably discover the newest and best breakfast joints around.
I'd barely taken my seat when a friendly waitress called over to ask if I would like coffee. Does the Pope shit in the woods? Now, I generally don't have high expectations of diner coffee. Like glitter eyeshadow or new episodes of "Gossip Girl," I'm OK with diner coffee's quantity exceeding its quality. My curiosity was piqued by an Illy sign on the window of Rise & Shine, and no kidding, that coffee was delish.
I ordered my standby of poached eggs, bacon, and brown toast, then settled in to read the paper. [Trivia! In Canada we order brown toast, but in the U.S. we order "wheat" toast. Which is funny, because then what is the white toast made from?] My breakfast arrived shortly after I ordered, and included baked beans. Super bonus times! Also, the poached eggs were separated into two little ramekins, which may not seem like a big deal, except that when they're together in a dish I often puncture the second egg's yolk when I try to scoop the first egg onto my toast. It's the little things, people.
Also, see that pile of bacon? There were seven pieces. Of bacon. In Heaven, every meal comes with seven pieces of bacon. I ate all of them. Don't tell my arteries. Or my ass.
Finally, eating that orange slice at the end of the meal made me feel oh-so-virtuous. Because a little vitamin C makes up for excessive bacon consumption, right?
